Free Halloween party in Channahon
Grand Dental – Channahon is pleased to announce that after a 2 year hiatus, the annual free Halloween Magic Show will return in the fall of 2015. This year, the magic show will be part of a larger community Halloween Party event. On Saturday, October 17th, 2015, the staff of Grand Dental – Channahon will host a party at their office from 3-6pm. The location is 25158 W. Eames Street (Route 6) in Channahon, Illinois.
In the past, the Vegas-style annual Halloween Show featured the talents of Pam’s Academy of Dance in Channahon and Morris, and the On Broadway Dancers of Coal City. In addition, the Channahon Park District and Standard Bank have teamed up to sponsor this free event for our local community. Tigers, camels, zebras, monkeys, skunks and more have graced the stage, along with the wizardry of Dr. Mark Kaschube, to entertain audiences from 2 to 92. Charity aspects of the show included friend of Grand Dental, Dani Smith, and local charity Salute, Inc., which helps families of soldiers returning from war.
The Magic Dentist at Grand Dental Group
Dr. Mark Kaschube, one of the founding partners of Grand Dental, is a dentist by day and also a professional magician and illusionist. For years, Dr. Mark, along with his dental staff, has donated their time and energy to this worthy event. The annual Halloween Show originated over 20 years ago to provide a safe, family-friendly environment to celebrate Dr. Mark’s favorite season of the year!
This year, the Halloween Party will take place in the parking lot of Grand Dental – Channahon. The party will start at 3pm with inflatables, Camel rides, and a large Bungee Jumpy. At 5pm, the party moves under the “big top tent” for the Magic Show! Patients, friends, family, and the entire community is welcome to come and partake in the fun! And of course, no Halloween Magic Show is complete without surprises and prizes for all!

Victor R. Gonzalez, B.S., C. D., D.D. S., M.S.
Grand Dental Group is pleased to announce that Dr. Victor Gonzalez will be joining our group. Dr. Gonzalez is a board certified pediatric dentist, specializing in the treatment and needs of children and young adult patients. Our offices are proud to share with our patients and dental family a bit more about who Dr. Gonzalez is, along with his extensive and impressive credentials.
Dr. Gonzalez received his dental degree from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala where he was recipient of the “Top Student in Pediatric Dentistry” award and was honored with a “Rotary Foundation Educational Award” for outstanding student in Central America.
He attended University of Illinois at the Medical Center in Chicago where he obtained a Certificate of Pediatric Dentistry and a Master of Science academic degree.
Previous academic appointments include Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Pediatric Dentistry Department, where he dedicated his time to the area of Growth & Development and Preventive and Interceptive Orthodontics for the child patient. He also served as Clinic Director of the Undergraduate Pediatric Dentistry Clinic.
Dr. Gonzalez recently retired from Midwestern University where he had an appointment of Assistant Professor, served as Clinic Supervisor and Supervisor of the Specialty Suites.
Dr. Gonzalez is certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and in additional to his extensive years in higher education, he has been in active practice for over 30 years. He regularly attends conferences and seminars that focus on the latest developments in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, providing enormous benefits to his young patients.
Although all of our Grand Dental Group general dentists treat pediatric patients at all of our locations, it is a significant benefit to have a pediatric specialist on staff. Pediatric dentists receive additional training and education, above and beyond that of undergraduate degrees and general dental school programs. They are highly skilled in the specific medical, dental, emotional, and physical concerns that face children and young adults. Pedodontists often treat patients with special needs and physical, mental or emotional limitations or conditions. In addition, pediatric dentists are familiar and very comfortable in communicating with their patients’ parents and guardians.
Dr. Gonzalez understands the family dynamics of his patients and their loved ones. He aims to serve your family with the highest level of service with the quality of care you deserve. Dr. Gonzalez’ philosophy is to establish early, attainable, and reasonable goals with parents and their child which will promote oral health throughout childhood and beyond. In addition to enjoying his patients and practice, Dr. Gonzalez appreciates history and travel.
Dr. Victor Gonzalez is welcoming new patients and current patients at our Grand Dental – Aurora and Grand Dental – Sycamore locations. Families are welcome and encouraged to call our office and schedule a time to meet Dr. Gonzalez and his competent staff. Our Grand Dental Group family could not be more thrilled to welcome Dr. Gonzalez to our dental home.
Girl Scout Events at Grand Dental
Our Grand Dental Group dentists, hygienists, and assistants are passionate about community service and youth mentoring. Our entire team enjoys growing today’s youth into tomorrow’s leaders. We understand that interacting with children and teens helps to facilitate the process of turning young people into well-rounded, high-functioning members of society. In particular, our offices work closely with such service-oriented groups as the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA. Many of our staff persons are former scouts themselves and acutely aware of the positive impact scouting had had on their professional and personal lives. All of our Grand Dental Group locations offer trips and tours for troops and dens that are part of The Girl Scouts of the USA and the Boy Scouts of America. Our offices are wheelchair accessible, smoke free, animal free, and free of latex and other common environmental and food-related allergens.
Girl Scouts of the USA Badge and Journey Programs
Without a doubt, our staffers that are former Girl Scouts speak highly of their experiences with this worthy organization. Growing girls into confident, educated women of high ethical standards is important to our female Grand Dental Group professionals. To foster this growth in young girls and teens, our office offers custom tailored Girl Scout events in our 4 locations. In the past, troops of Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes have all earned various badges and patches in dentistry, health, fitness, science, self-respect, and well-being.
When possible, our offices offer our facilities and create programs that allow girls to grow their knowledge, not just of dentistry and oral health, but of overall health and general well-being. This may include badges and journeys that focus on girl confidence and empowerment and personal growth.
Girl Scout Badges
Some of the most popular badge events hosted for Girl Scout troops are for the Daisy Girl Scout Gloria Petal and the Brownie Girl Scout My Best Self Badge.
The Gloria Petal focuses on self-respect and respecting others. It represents part of the Girl Scout Law. At a Grand Dental Gloria Petal Event, our team discusses respect with Daisy Girl Scouts as it pertains to oral and overall health: respecting one’s body through exercise, healthy eating habits and good personal hygiene, along with respecting the health and safety of others. In addition, our staff discusses how girls can show respect towards authority figures or figures of higher education, such as dentists and doctors.
The Brownie badge, My Best Self, also focuses on wellness and becoming the best Brownie a girl can be! Our team reviews how Brownie Girl Scouts can keep their mouths and bodies in good shape with excellent home oral hygiene care, healthy eating, and exercise. A discussion about female opportunities in health care and dentistry is also provided.
In our experience, girls respond most to hands-on experiences and experiments. For that reason, our events will also include different hands-on learning opportunities and science experiments such as: taking digital x-rays, placing dental sealants, taking dental impressions, fabricating dental plaster molds, and learning how cavities are made. Rest assured that these activities will be age-appropriate and are extremely safe for the girls to perform. Girl safety is our #1 concern! There is no doubt that these experiments are the highlight of our event programs and well-received by all scouts!
Troop leaders and parents have the opportunity to request additional services such as a light snack and time and space to close the meeting, etc. At all events, girls will receive a tour of the office and an explanation of the different jobs within the dental field. Our team also provides all participants with a dental care take home package and a Grand Dental Experience Participation Patch.
All of our tours and trips are complimentary and held year-round. Every effort is made to host the event at a time that is convenient as possible for the troop. All Girl Scout Troops are welcome to contact one of our offices for more information. The events are open for scouts’ parents, leaders, and siblings to attend, as well.
With a passion for outreach and a commitment to service, our offices offer several programs to engage youth and families within our local communities. All of our Grand Dental Group locations offer trips and tours for community groups, schools, and daycare centers. The Girl Scouts of the USA and the Boy Scouts of America are also organizations that we serve. We also welcome groups from senior citizen centers, adult group homes, and organizations that work with special needs children and adults. Our offices are wheelchair accessible, smoke free, animal free, and free of latex and other common allergens.
Scouting Badge/Patch Events
Grand Dental offices offer programs to help Cub Scout and Girl Scout Troops earn various badges and patches in dentistry, health, fitness, science, self-respect, and well-being. Many of our team members are former scouts or currently active with scouting through their own families. We also have dental team members who are certified counselors for the Boy Scouts of America Dentistry Merit Badge. Troops and Dens are welcome to contact one of our offices for more information. We offer our facilities and staff for these events, year-round. Our team will work to arrange a time and day that is convenient for your troop, den, or pack. We will create a tailor-made program for your group that provides the type of educational or fun trip, tour or event you seek. If needed, our team can include light refreshments for your group and all of our events include a dental healthcare take home package. The events are open for scouts’ parents, leaders, and siblings to attend, as well.
School/Day Care Office Tours and Presentations
Our offices have developed fun and educational programs for preschool and school-aged children, and their teachers, classmates and families. Daycare centers and home daycare providers are also welcome to arrange a presentation or dentist trip and tour of our facilities. We combine magic tricks, reading, and interactive activities to engage children in learning about the dental office and their overall health. We offer office tours and dental health presentations that are age-appropriate and exciting. Our highly trained staff can either bring this entertaining program to your classroom or child care center, or for the full hands-on experience, we can schedule a tour of one of our facilities. The presentations come complete with a take home dental treat bag for each attendee and educational pamphlets about dental services and procedures for parents and guardians. In-office presentations also include child-friendly “rides” in the dental chair, “show and tell” with dental equipment, and fun interactions between our dental staff and the children. Our focus is to educate children and take the fear out of visiting the dentist with magic and friendly faces! Call one of our offices today to discuss options for your group’s dental presentation and tour.
In addition to year-round events, our offices also encourage and promote awareness for October’s Dental Hygiene Month and February’s Children’s Dental Health Month. We are able to create programs for your school or community group that specifically address these national campaigns. Please contact our team today for more information.
Merit badges are part of the Boy Scout advancement program. There are more than 130 merit badges currently, and the dentistry badge is one of them. The dentistry merit badge is earned when a boy scout performs all of the requirements of the badge and shows proficiency in the area of study.
When a boy scout shows an interested in earning the dentistry merit badge, he is given the contact information for approved and certified counselors for dentistry. Merit badge counselors are people who have special knowledge in their merit badge subjects and are interested in helping boy scouts learn and advance. With the help and guidance of the counselor, the boy scout can earn the badge.
Who becomes a merit badge counselor?
To become a merit badge counselor, one must show evidence that they are highly educated and experienced in their particular area of interest. For the dentistry badge, it is likely that counselors will be either dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, or specialists in the dental profession.
Because counselors work closely with boy scouts, they must consent to a background check, provide personal and professional references, and become trained on youth protection. Counselors also agree to safely work with scouts under the strict rules and guidelines set by the Boy Scouts of America.
What does earning the dentistry merit badge require?
The dentistry merit badge consists of 7 sections. The requirements to earn the badge cover tooth and oral anatomy and accurately reading dental radiographs. Scouts must learn the cause and progression of dental decay and gum disease. Emergency dental treatment and the negative effects of tobacco on oral health are also covered.
Scouts earning the badge will meet with a dentist as part of the requirements and identify with know-how the different instruments and pieces of equipment used in the dental office clinic. Badge applicants also keep a dietary record to determine what foods can cause tooth decay as well as learn about the benefits of fluorides and the role that saliva and enzymes take in aiding digestion.
To exhibit their aptitude in the subject area, scouts will make a model of a tooth and demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. Additionally, badge candidates will create a dental disease prevention poster board or make a drawing reflecting the progression of dental decay and discuss dental restorations and procedures. Other options are to collect dental product advertisements and discuss the accuracy of the ads or write a story for a school or local paper about oral health concerns, including those caused by tobacco use.
Where can I find more information about the dentistry merit badge or counselors?
The Boy Scouts of America website that provides information on how boys can become scouts, how boy scouts can earn their dentistry merit badge, and how interested persons can become merit badge counselors in their area of expertise or interest.
In addition, Grand Dental Group offers certified dentistry merit badge counselors for boy scouts in the greater Chicagoland area and its surrounding and far suburbs.
